Despite the closure of Tokyo's bustling seafood trading center, stores around the former Tsukiji fish market place were full of year-end buyers at 30 in December.
Last-minute visitors bought pre-prepared dishes and ingredients for New Year's holidays in stores dealing with fresh seafood, processed seafood and delicatessen items at the Tsukiji Jogai Shijo (Outer Market).
The fish market, which opened in 1935, was moved to the Toyosu district in the capital in October.
The director of the Tsukiji district promotion association, said that around 460 stores are open, offering everything from seafood, meat and seaweed to dry foods, tea and cooking utensils. The establishments receive both professional chefs and housewives.
