Two Japanese were arrested for allegedly trying to smuggle 12 pounds of gold bars to Bangladesh, the country's customs authority said on Thursday.

Takeo Mimura and Shuichi Sato arrived at Dhaka International Airport on Wednesday night on a Malaysian flight, Md Shahidul Islam, Director General of the Customs Intelligence and Investigation Directorate, told reporters.

Customs officials, acting on a tip, stopped the pair as they tried to pass a customs strip “nothing to declare,” he said.

After the survey, 30 gold bars valued at about $ 712 were found in hidden pockets of his pants, according to Islam.

The men will be sent to court for prosecution under the law, he said, adding that this is the first time Japanese have been caught, allegedly trying to smuggle gold to the country.
