A fresh start for professional boxing events in Nicaragua
ESPN Mexico reported that professional boxing events will resume in Managua, the capital of Nicaragua, Central America, next Saturday, April 25 (local time).
Nicaragua is one of the few nations in the world in these pandemic times that still allow the practice of professional sports like football, baseball and boxing, even with a crowd of fans in the stands. Belarus is another country where professional sports continue to be practiced. Baseball games (in the preseason) started on Tuesday in South Korea.
On the other hand, boxing commissions in the United States, England, Mexico and Japan, refused to organize events with an audience.
The venue for the event next Saturday will be the Alexis Argüello Sports Center ( Polideportivo Alexis Argüello ), in Managua. The card will consist of eight fights and will be organized by Bufalo Boxing Promotions.
The main event will be an eight-round bout between Ramiro Blanco and Robin Zamora in the lightweight division, as well as half a dozen six rounders and a four-round opening bout.
- “Here in Nicaragua there is no quarantine. The Nicaraguan government and the Minister of Health have made a great effort to ensure that the pandemic does not cause turbulence in this country. ”- said Rosendo Alvarez, former world champion and promoter of the event.
According to national authorities, Nicaragua has only 10 detected cases of COVID-19 among its population, of which at least eight are from outside the country. Two people died, according to reports.
-“As boxing promoters, we have a responsibility to provide all fans who attend the event with the necessary conditions for their safety. We will measure the temperature of participants, stewards and fans; there will be alcohol in gel, soap, water - the facilities are adequate for this event and we will prioritize the safety and health of everyone.”- Alvarez said.
In addition, other security measures will be taken:
- “As an extra precaution, we will ask the fans not to sit together, so that they keep one meter of distance between them. And flight attendants, doctors and coaches will obviously have to wear latex masks and gloves. We all need to work, so we are making this effort. ”- added the promoter of the event.
Still on the venue, the Alexis Argüello Sports Center ( Polideportivo Alexis Argüello ), is a large gym where international competitions are held for each sport, but there is also speculation about the possibility that it will be closed (no entrance) before and after (the event), due to the number of seats reserved.
The ESPN Knockout, which continues to support small Latin American promoters, will broadcast the fights 'live' throughout Latin America (the event will also air on ESPN Deportes for the USA) direct from the Sports Center Alexis Argüello, in Managua (Nicaragua). Do not lose.
